Petal Sofa Guide for Hotels, Villas and Showrooms

A petal sofa can work well in a hotel lobby, villa living room or showroom, but its curves change four things you would not need to check on a straight sofa: how many people actually fit, where it can stand, which fabrics suit the seams, and how housekeeping will clean it. Confirm each of these on the exact model and configuration before you approve an order.

In short

  • Count marked seating positions, not lobes.
  • Check the back finish, hidden supports and rug edge before a floating layout.
  • Agree pattern alignment, seam performance and the cleaning method before choosing fabric.

This guide covers the questions to settle before ordering a petal or scalloped sofa, and what to send YEINIHOME when you request a quotation.

Petal Sofa Checklist at a Glance

Question Why the curve matters What to ask for
How many people fit? Overall width includes curved ends; each lobe is not a seat. A top view with seating positions marked
Can it stand away from the wall? The back may be visible from entrances and dining areas. Rear and corner views of the actual configuration
Can it sit partly on a rug? Hidden centre supports can land on the rug edge. An underside drawing showing every support
Will a striped or patterned fabric line up? Curved panels interrupt repeats at the seams. A panel map and the fabric’s repeat dimensions
How will it be cleaned? Seams and recesses trap dust; low bases limit access. The fabric cleaning code and base clearance

How Many People Can Sit on a Petal Sofa?

Count usable sitting positions, not lobes. A three-lobed back does not mean three seats, and dividing the overall width by a standard seat width ignores the space taken by rounded ends and arms.

Ask for a dimensioned top view with the intended seating positions marked. At each position, check where the backrest meets the sitter and how much seat depth remains in front of that point. A curved end often suits one person sitting at an angle but leaves less shoulder room for the person beside them.

If you can trial a sample, seat the number of people you plan for, with cushions in their normal positions, and check shoulder and elbow space when everyone sits back. For a hotel, record the result in your mock-up room approval so the seat count used in the room schedule matches what guests will actually experience.

Placing a Petal Sofa Away From the Wall

Petal sofas are often chosen as a centrepiece, which means the back is on show. Before you plan a floating layout, ask whether the model is made to stand freely in your configuration and how the back is finished.

  • Request a straight rear view, both rear corners and the base, and check seams, closures and module joints.
  • Confirm whether the back uses the same fabric reference as the front.
  • For modular versions, confirm the connectors for the free-standing layout. Do not rely on a wall to stop modules drifting apart.
  • Walk the route behind the full curve, including projecting ends and nearby doors.

Viewing Direction: TV Walls and Conversation Areas

Along a curve, every seat faces a slightly different direction. Mark the seating positions on the floor plan with an arrow showing which way each person faces, then add the TV or focal point. If only the centre seats face the screen comfortably, the sofa may be better suited to a conversation area than a TV lounge. A petal sofa is generally a lounge piece; if you are considering it for dining, trial it with the actual table, because seat height, reach to the tabletop and knee space rarely match dining seating.

Rugs and Hidden Supports

A styling plan shows the sofa’s outline, not where it touches the floor. Ask for an underside drawing showing the feet, continuous base sections and any centre supports, then mark the rug edge on it. A support that sits across the rug edge can make the sofa rock or pull modules out of line. Move the rug or choose a different size rather than removing a support or adding unapproved pads.

Choosing Fabric for Curved Seams

Patterned and Striped Fabrics

Stripes and motifs will not run continuously across every curved seam. Decide which alignments matter most, usually the front of the seat and back panels seen from the main viewpoint, and accept interruptions elsewhere.

Give the upholsterer the fabric’s usable width, horizontal and vertical repeat, repeat type and permitted direction. Textile supplier KOTHEA explains that matching depends on both repeats and on whether the design is a straight match or a half-drop, where alternate repeats are offset vertically (KOTHEA pattern matching guide). Ask for a panel map showing where the requested alignment cannot be achieved, and expect a patterned fabric to need more metres than a plain one. Approve the appearance and the fabric quantity as two separate decisions.

How the Seams Feel and How They Hold

Rounded panels mean more seams where the body makes contact, typically under the thighs and along inner arms. A flat swatch cannot show this, so ask to see the fabric on a curved, seamed section or a finished sample. Comfort comes from the cover, cushioning and shape working together, as the Polyurethane Foam Association notes in its furniture design guidance (PFA: Foam in Furniture Design).

How a seam feels and how well it holds are different questions. The Association for Contract Textiles describes seam slippage as yarns pulling away from the stitching under tension (ACT physical properties guidelines). For a high-traffic lobby, ask for the fabric’s seam slippage result alongside its abrasion rating. Our sofa fabric guide covers the other ratings to request.

YEINIHOME seat cushions commonly use 45D, 50D or 55D foam, and some models use goose down-and-feather filling. Ask for the filling specification by cushion position for the petal model you choose; density alone does not tell you how firm the seat will feel.

Cleaning and Housekeeping

Curved seams and recesses collect dust, so agree a cleaning method with your housekeeping team before choosing the fabric.

  • Check the cleaning code. The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute explains the household fabric codes; X-coded fabric should only be vacuumed or lightly brushed, and a W code is not permission to soak an assembled sofa (DLI cleanability codes).
  • Vacuum seams gently. Use an upholstery attachment and work along the curves without pushing a narrow nozzle into a closed seam. Kvadrat’s maintenance guide recommends vacuuming velour and chenille in the direction of the pile and avoiding hard rubbing (Kvadrat maintenance guide). Follow the instructions for your actual fabric.
  • Plan for the base. If the property uses robotic floor cleaners, compare the robot maker’s stated clearance with the lowest point under the sofa, including rails and centre supports, not just the visible leg gap. Where it does not fit, set an exclusion zone rather than raising the sofa on unapproved risers.
  • Throws are separate. A washable throw does not make the upholstery beneath it washable. Dark throws on pale seats can transfer colour by rubbing, which ACT describes as crocking (ACT wet and dry crocking).

FAQ

Does a three-lobed petal sofa seat three people?

Not necessarily. Use the marked seating positions and usable dimensions of the exact model. Decorative lobes and seams do not define seats.

Can a petal sofa stand in the middle of a room?

Yes, if the model is designed for it and the back is finished for display. Confirm the rear finish and, for modular versions, the connectors for that layout.

Is bouclé a good fabric for a petal sofa?

It is popular because it softens the curves visually, but bouclé loops can snag and trap dust in seams. For hotels and rentals, check the abrasion and snagging performance of the specific fabric and agree the cleaning method first.

Can stripes match all the way around a petal sofa?

Usually not at every seam. Agree the priority alignments on a panel map and accept interruptions on less visible joins.

Can I order a single petal sofa for a showroom or villa?

Yes. YEINIHOME accepts orders from one piece per model. Confirm the model, size, fabric and delivery scope in your enquiry.
