Mattress Firmness and Support: How to Review a Sample
Review mattress firmness through a consistent sample comparison, then record support-related observations separately. A word such as medium or firm is too broad to carry a hotel purchase decision on its own.
Agree What the Review Is Trying to Decide
The National Bed Federation notes that comfort is subjective and that firmness ratings are not standardised across manufacturers. See National Bed Federation — Buying a Bed That Is Right for You. Comparing labels from different suppliers is therefore less useful than comparing identified samples.
Before the review, decide who represents the project’s design and operations teams. Use the intended base, protector and bedding, and record the sample condition and setup. If one sample has just been unpacked, follow its supplier’s preparation instructions before comparing it with another.
Write Observations That Another Buyer Can Understand

Use the same prompts for every candidate. Keep individual responses before discussing a group decision so the group discussion preserves differences. These observations describe the review; they are not laboratory measurements or a prediction of every guest’s experience.
Do Not Use Density as a Firmness Score
The Polyurethane Foam Association treats density and firmness as separate foam properties in Polyurethane Foam Association — Foam Performance. Ask for the relevant material data when comparing specifications, but do not translate a density number into a guaranteed feel for the complete mattress.
Likewise, a soft surface impression does not by itself document the support performance of the whole construction. Where the project requires performance evidence, request the appropriate model-specific information separately from the comfort review.
Save the Decision With the Sample Reference
Record the selected model, configuration, base and bedding setup. State whether the selection is approved, rejected or subject to another sample. If the construction changes before production, reopen the relevant checks rather than carrying the old approval forward automatically.

Compare Samples Without Changing the Setup
Use the same compatible base, protector and bedding for each candidate where the manufacturers' instructions allow it. Note the configuration before anyone tries the sample. If two mattresses require different bases, record that difference and compare them as complete bed systems; a change in feel cannot then be attributed to the mattress alone.
Follow each supplier's unpacking and preparation instructions. Write down whether the sample was ready for review under those instructions. There is no preparation time in this checklist that applies to every mattress.
- Give each sample a code linked to its construction and size.
- Use the same observation prompts and intended sleeping positions for each candidate.
- Record each reviewer's response before the group discusses a preference.
- Repeat a questioned comparison with the setup checked, then record the decision and remaining uncertainty.
Keep Surface Feel, Edge Use and Movement Separate
A reviewer may like the sleeping surface yet find turning over difficult, or prefer one sample when lying down and another when getting out of bed. Give those observations separate fields. Record what happened in ordinary use and which setup produced it. Do not turn a sitting-at-the-edge observation into a measured edge-strength or durability claim.
The National Bed Federation explains that comfort preferences differ and firmness labels do not provide an industry-wide comparison scale. A mixed review is useful information. It can show that one specification has not yet been agreed for the intended rooms.
Write a Decision That Can Be Revisited
Instead of writing only medium firm approved, retain the sample code, base, bedding, reasons for selection and any unresolved observation. State which construction changes would require another sample. Density and firmness remain separate material properties in the PFA guidance; neither a foam density nor a group preference is a clinical outcome.

Is Medium Firm the Same Across Suppliers?
Do not treat the labels as a shared scale. Compare identified samples and ask what each supplier's rating describes.
Does a Comfort Review Replace Performance Evidence?
No. Record comfort observations separately from any required reports for the mattress construction and intended application.
What if reviewers prefer different mattresses?
Keep their individual observations and the setup details. Agree which users and room types the decision must serve, and request another comparison if the choice remains unresolved.
