Spring, Foam and Hybrid Mattresses: How to Compare Specifications
Compare mattresses by their complete construction and the proposed sample. A spring, foam or hybrid label is a starting point; it does not specify the comfort layers, edge construction, cover or compatibility with the bed base.
Ask What Is Inside Each Sample
The National Bed Federation distinguishes sprung from non-sprung mattresses and describes both spring interiors and the fillings used above them. Its National Bed Federation: How to Choose a Mattress shows why two mattresses described with the same broad type can still have different constructions.
| Type Being Compared | Questions for the Supplier |
|---|---|
| Spring | What spring system, comfort layers and edge arrangement are proposed? |
| Foam | What materials and thicknesses make up each layer? |
| Hybrid | Which components are combined, and what does this supplier mean by hybrid? |
Request a layer schedule tied to the sample code. It should identify the cover, filling or comfort layers, support core and any separate topper. If a supplier cannot disclose a proprietary detail, record what remains unknown rather than filling the gap with a typical specification.
Separate Material Data From the Finished Feel
The Polyurethane Foam Association explains that foam density and firmness are independent properties. A denser foam can be soft, while a lower-density foam can be firm. See Polyurethane Foam Association: foam performance. A density figure alone therefore cannot establish how the complete mattress will feel.
Ask which layer a quoted figure refers to and what unit is used. Keep that information next to the layer thickness and sample reference. Do not compare a value for a thin comfort layer with a value for another mattress’s support core as though they describe equivalent components.
Use the Same Review Conditions
Compare candidate mattresses on their approved base arrangements, using the intended protector and bedding. Record those conditions. A change in the setup should be visible on the review sheet rather than attributed automatically to the mattress material.
Consider the comfort sample review and mattress inspection checklist together. One records the buyer’s experience; the other checks whether the delivered sample matches the documents and required evidence.
Choose a Defined Configuration
For a hotel or apartment package, retain the selected sample code and construction schedule with the order. If a component is substituted, identify the change and decide whether another sample is needed. Ask YEINIHOME about the proposed configuration through the project enquiry form, alongside the bedroom furniture selection it must work with.
Read pocket spring mattress construction by layer
Ask what a quoted spring count includes before comparing it with another number. Record the reference mattress dimensions, the support-core count and any separate mini-spring layers. A total without these details cannot show whether the two specifications describe similar constructions.
The National Bed Federation mattress guide describes both pocket-spring cores and mini springs used in comfort layers. It also identifies spring geometry and wire characteristics as variables affecting the mattress. A larger combined count is therefore not a complete description of the support core.
Consider two hypothetical schedules for the same mattress size. Schedule A lists 1,000 springs in the support core and 1,000 in a separate comfort layer. Schedule B lists 2,000 springs in its support core and no spring comfort layer. Both total 2,000. The equal total does not make their layer structures equivalent or establish which will suit a particular sleeper. These figures are an invented comparison for reading specifications, not YEINIHOME model data.
Keep material measurements attached to their layer
For each foam layer, record the material, thickness, density unit and any separately specified firmness result. PFA explains that density and firmness are different properties. Do not compare density in one quote with a firmness number in another, or average all layer densities into a purported comfort score.
Ask how the perimeter is constructed and whether the order size changes the layer layout. Record missing information as a question for the supplier. Avoid inferring the internal construction from quilting, edge thickness or a cutaway photograph of an unidentified sample.
Send the two layer schedules and their open questions to YEINIHOME (言逸家) with the mattress enquiry. Keep the selected sample code, size and base requirements attached to the eventual specification. The brand's published sofa-foam grades do not establish the materials inside a mattress; those must be confirmed for the chosen mattress model.
A combined density can conceal different foam layers
PFA: foam performance defines density as mass per unit volume and distinguishes it from firmness. For a layered mattress, ask for each foam layer's density and thickness before considering any combined number.
Take an imaginary slab with two layers of equal surface area: a 2 cm layer at 30 kg/m³ and an 8 cm layer at 50 kg/m³. Ignoring covers, adhesives and other components, its combined density is (2 × 30 + 8 × 50) ÷ 10 = 46 kg/m³. The simple average, 40 kg/m³, gives the thin layer too much weight. Neither result says that either individual layer has a density of 46.
This is a geometry and mass example, not a mattress specification or a comfort score. It assumes uniform layers with no cut-outs. A whole mattress containing springs, fabric or other materials cannot be treated as that foam-only slab.
Keep the original layer schedule
Retain the material and thickness of each layer, its stated density unit and any separately documented firmness result. Ask what a quoted average includes. If the supplier cannot identify its basis, leave it unresolved instead of assigning the number to the support core.
When discussing mattresses with YEINIHOME (言逸家), request the chosen model's own schedule. Sofa foam grades do not identify mattress layers. Compare the finished sample on its approved base after the construction has been clarified.
Questions Before You Order
Does a Hybrid Label Define the Whole Mattress?
No. Ask the supplier to describe the components, layers, cover and base requirements for the proposed model.
Can Two Mattresses Be Compared on Different Bases?
Record the approved base used for each sample. Differences in setup should remain visible when discussing the preference; use a consistent setup where the models permit it.
Is a larger total spring count enough to choose a mattress?
No. Establish the reference mattress size, which layers are counted and the construction of each layer, then review the defined finished sample.
Can two foam densities be averaged to describe a mattress?
A simple average is misleading when layer volumes differ. Even a correctly volume-weighted foam density does not describe each layer, firmness or the complete mattress.
